Good piece, Michelle. And helpful. Four books in, I still feel a desperate desire to pen a novel. And am as desperate as ever for ways to motivate and help me keep my backside on the chair. Starting out, I took the pressure off by aiming to write a short story, then another, and another...set in the environs of a factory. I was too intimidated to even think 'novel'. Now I know that first draft is like any awkward social situation, a bit clumsy, embarrassing, uncertain, everyone waiting to be introduced. Things only begin to warm up once you know people's names and a little about them, and things tend to get warmer the more you know. Until you're in the middle of a red-hot party and can't drag yourself away. Note to self (to be repeated every day): It's a process. Trust it.

We see a lot of "education campaigns" - but these just end up being "advertising campaigns". It'd be great to see more of the money being used supporting community groups who work with young people already.

The high rate of Indigenous youth committing suicide, particularly in the NT is concerning. A more cultural type of intervention may be more effective. Rosemary Wanganeen produced a 'seven phase grief and loss' process that could be a promising beginning...

I think it's time the Australian government started looking into decriminalising certain drugs. Of course this is a highly unpopular view because many people think that means we are condoning the use of drugs and that drug use will increase substantially if drug users aren't threatened with harsh sanctions. Portugal decriminalised all drugs and has replaced jail sentences with drug rehabilitation and therapy. So far it hasn't resulted in higher rates of drug use or attracted "drug tourists" so in this sense it is a success. However there are always a number of factors contributing to a country's rates of drug use so what works for Portugal may not necessarily work for us.

I think talkback radio hosts have this great ability to connect with listeners on an emotive level and so this will generally beat statistics any day. Scientists aren't as skilled with the media as journalists, politicians etc. so I agree that if scientists were able to use the data in a way that was more relevant to "everyday Australian" (like you said, a narrative) then reaching a consensus would become a lot easier. I think a lot of people find it difficult to picture things at such a large scale, for example, saying that the Earth's overall temperature has increased by 1 degree doesn't seem that much to us but if scientists could highlight how it would effect the individual then maybe it would have more significance.
